CT/CF - DNA: A new biomarker for early onset detection of cancer.
Project Summary
This project is a clinical trial on using a biological marker in the bloodstream as an early detection method of cancer. cfDNA (circulating free DNA) refers to tiny fragments of DNA that naturally circulate in the bloodstream, released from normal cells as they grow and repair of ctDNA (circulating tumour DNA) is a subset of cfDNA that comes specifically from cancer cells. Analytical studies have shown that during the early stages of cancer there in an increase the ct-DNA levels of the patient. The problem arises in that every person has a different baseline level of ct-DNA. This project is proposing a 3 year study, where 3000 patients take perform a blood test at regular intervals and their ct-DNA levels are recorded, and risk of early onset of cancer is diagnosed. This method has been identified as a potential detector of over 8 different types of cancer.
